IELTS Task 2 — Structuring a Discussion Essay

Outline the recommended paragraph structure for an IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 discussion essay ("Discuss both views and give your own opinion"). Briefly explain what each paragraph should contain.

Solution

A well-structured discussion essay has four paragraphs:

1. Introduction (~50 words)

  • Paraphrase the topic in your own words (do not copy the prompt).
  • Briefly mention that both views exist.
  • State your own position clearly (thesis statement).

2. Body Paragraph 1 — First view (~90 words)

  • Topic sentence presenting the first perspective.
  • Explanation of the reasoning behind this view.
  • A concrete example or supporting evidence.

3. Body Paragraph 2 — Second view (~90 words)

  • Topic sentence presenting the opposing perspective.
  • Explanation and example, as above.

4. Conclusion (~40 words)

  • Restate your thesis without copying the introduction.
  • Summarise which view you find more convincing and why (one sentence).

Tips:

  • Use a different linking device to open each paragraph (Firstly / Furthermore / On the other hand / In conclusion).
  • Never introduce new arguments in the conclusion.
  • Aim for 260–280 words to give yourself a safe buffer above the 250-word minimum.
